Kordofan
Kordofan is a region in central Sudan comprising three states: North Kordofan, South Kordofan and West Kordofan. The region spans a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the more fertile savannahs to the south. Kordofan's economy is based on agriculture, livestock herding and natural resource extraction, particularly gold mining and gum arabic production. The region is ethnically diverse, with Arab, Nuba, Fur and other communities, and has experienced recurring tensions over land, resources and political representation. South Kordofan, also known as the Nuba Mountains region, has been a site of protracted conflict between government forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) since 2011. The capital of North Kordofan is El-Obeid, a major commercial and transport hub. Kordofan's gold deposits have attracted both artisanal miners and organised armed groups, including the Rapid Support Forces, whose economic interests in the region have fuelled competition and violence. The region's strategic location and resource wealth make it significant in Sudan's broader political and military landscape. Kordofan has been affected by the civil war that erupted in April 2023, with fighting and displacement impacting local communities. Humanitarian access to parts of Kordofan has been constrained by insecurity, exacerbating food insecurity and other vulnerabilities.
