Patriotic Alliance
The Patriotic Alliance is a South African political party founded in 2013. The party is led by Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene, both former convicts who have repositioned themselves as political figures. It campaigns on a platform that emphasises law and order, anti-corruption measures, and economic nationalism, often adopting populist rhetoric on issues such as illegal immigration and crime. The Patriotic Alliance has positioned itself as a voice for marginalised communities, particularly coloured South Africans, and has gained support in urban areas including Cape Town and Johannesburg. The party has contested national and local elections, securing representation in several municipalities. In the 2024 general election, it won seats in the National Assembly and subsequently joined the Government of National Unity, with McKenzie appointed as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture. The party's funding and operations fall under the regulatory framework of the Political Party Funding Act. Its leadership has been vocal on issues of organised crime and has called for stronger enforcement by agencies such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The Patriotic Alliance remains a minor but increasingly visible player in South African politics, known for its confrontational style and focus on security and governance issues.
