Newcastle
Newcastle is a city in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, situated in the north-western interior of the province. It is the third-largest urban centre in KwaZulu-Natal after Durban and Pietermaritzburg, with a population of approximately 400 000 in the greater municipal area. The city serves as an important industrial and commercial hub, historically anchored by coal mining, steel production and energy generation. Newcastle lies at the heart of the province's coal belt and hosts major heavy-industry facilities, including steelworks and power stations. In recent years the local economy has diversified to include renewable energy projects, agriculture, tourism and telecommunications infrastructure development. The city's strategic location along the N11 national route linking KwaZulu-Natal with Mpumalanga and Gauteng enhances its role as a logistics and distribution node. Newcastle is also a service centre for surrounding farming communities and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the region. The municipality has prioritised digital connectivity, with investments in 4G, 5G, cloud services and Internet of Things infrastructure to support economic growth. Newcastle was established in the mid-nineteenth century and named after the British coal city of Newcastle upon Tyne, reflecting its early coal-mining heritage.
