Digital Identity
Digital identity is a technology framework that enables individuals, organisations and devices to be uniquely identified and authenticated in electronic systems and online environments. It comprises a collection of digitally stored attributes, credentials and identifiers that represent a person or entity in the digital realm, including biometric data, government-issued identification numbers, login credentials and behavioural patterns. Digital identity systems allow users to prove who they are when accessing services, conducting transactions or interacting with government and private-sector platforms. The technology underpins a wide range of applications, from e-government services and financial inclusion to healthcare access and border control. Robust digital identity frameworks rely on secure authentication methods, often combining something the user knows (such as a password), something they have (such as a mobile device) and something they are (biometric markers such as fingerprints or facial recognition). Governments and international bodies are increasingly adopting digital identity schemes to improve service delivery, reduce fraud and enhance data privacy, with countries such as India and Estonia serving as prominent examples of large-scale implementation. The technology raises important questions around data protection, surveillance and the need for strong regulatory oversight to prevent misuse. Digital identity is a key enabler of digital transformation and digital governance, allowing citizens to interact with public and private institutions in a secure, efficient and inclusive manner. As adoption grows, interoperability standards and frameworks for digital literacy are becoming critical to ensure equitable access and user trust.
