Brits
Brits is a town in the North West province of South Africa, situated in the Madibeng local municipality within the Bojanala Platinum district. It lies close to the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, the world's largest known repository of platinum-group metals, and functions as a key service centre for the surrounding mining industry. The town's economy is closely tied to platinum, chrome and associated processing operations, with companies such as Northam Platinum, Glencore and Eastern Platinum operating mines and plants in its vicinity, including the Zondereinde, Eland and Maroelabult mines. Beyond mining, Brits also has an agricultural base, benefiting from irrigation drawn from the Hartbeespoort Dam area, supporting citrus and other crop farming. Its population is modest by South African urban standards, with the surrounding municipal area housing a larger number of residents dependent on mining-related employment. The town has seen periodic investment in renewable energy and tailings retreatment projects linked to the platinum sector, reflecting broader efforts to diversify the local economy and extend the life of mining operations. Job creation in Brits is closely linked to the fortunes of the platinum-group metals market, given the town's reliance on mining as its principal employer. Historically established as a farming settlement, Brits grew alongside the development of the Bushveld Complex's platinum resources through the twentieth century. It remains a focal point for discussions on mining investment, beneficiation and socioeconomic development in North West province.
