Specialist intellectual property law firm Spoor & Fisher’s commitment to upholding Mandela’s values was shared by its employees and brought to life on Mandela Day. Every year on 18 July, the day Nelson Mandela was born, individuals around the world mark the day by spending 67 minutes making a difference in their communities. To celebrate the day, Spoor & Fisher rallied employees to spend 67 minutes to support activities in their communities. Employees spent time at the Botshabelo Babies Home in Midrand and the SPCA in Lyttelton.

Sue Scott, HR Manager at Spoor & Fisher, says “The involvement of our staff beyond the 67 minutes really brought to life Tata’s values and their efforts reflect our dedication to the communities we operate in.”

“Mandela said a good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination, and our partners and attorneys clearly demonstrated that together we can all contribute towards a world Mandela dreamt of.”

At the Botshabelo Babies Home in Midrand, a safe haven for abandoned babies, Spoor & Fisher donated disposable diapers, baby food, cereal, stationery and toiletries. The home goes through 26 000 disposable diapers and just under 200 baby formula tins per annum.

Besides a place of safety for babies, the home also serves the community by providing quality and affordable pre-school education and trains pre-school teachers in the surrounding communities. Botshabelo currently houses thirteen babies between the tender ages of six months and two years.

“This was an invaluable experience and as a team, we all left with happy hearts knowing that the little time we walked in Tata’s footsteps, we were able to contribute to nation building in a small way.”

In addition to donating a number of supplies on the Tshwane SPCA’s wish list, the team was given a walk about of the facility as well as educated on the SPCA’s operations. During their stay at the facility, Spoor & Fisher’s staff helped with cleaning the kennels, walking the dogs as well as feeding.

“The selfless efforts of the full-time volunteers was motivating. Mandela said, a fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of. I am inspired to just do that,” says Charles Webster, Chairperson of the Spoor & Fisher Partnership in conclusion.
