Parliaments Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has expressed its disappointment at the behaviour of one of its Members who apparently drew up an indictment purportedly from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The Committee Chairperson, Dr Mathole Motshekga, said the NPA consists of professionals who are able to do their job and should be allowed to do their job. “They must do their work without fear or favour. We expect the same from any Member of the Committee from any political party to respect that institution, ” said Dr Motshekga.
Dr Motshekga's comments come after a purported criminal indictment against the three Gupta brothers, Atul, Rajesh, Ajay and the Minister of Mineral Resources Mr Mosebenzi Zwane that was reportedly drafted by former NPA prosecutor and Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament, Ms Glynnis Breytenbach.
It was reported in the last weekend (28 January) Sunday Times paper that the Guptas and Minister Zwane would be charged in the next few weeks with money laundering for their alleged role in the Estina Dairy Project scandal. The paper reported that the finalised indictment was sitting with NPA head Advocate Shaun Abrahams.
Dr Motshekga said the Committee sees this in a very serious light and appeals to the public and Members of Parliament not to interfere with the work of the NPA.
