The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is very pleased to announce that all the mineworkers who were trapped underground since Wednesday night at Beatrix Mine have all been rescued this morning. Beatrix Mine is an operation owned by Sibanye Stillwater.
We can also confirm that all workers did not sustain any injuries. They are all healthy, but they are just exhausted and resting at home. The NUM is concerned that there were no contingency measures or plans put in place to deal with this kind of an incident.
This is not the first incident to happen in the Free State. The same incident happened at Harmony Phakisa mine where at least 30 mineworkers were trapped underground last week. They were rescued after twelve hours.
The NUM is extremely worried about health and safety measures in all mining companies in South Africa. We are calling upon the Department of Mineral Resources as the regulator in the mining industry to conduct infrastructure audits in all mining houses to see if they are ready to deal with this kind of incidents when they happen.
