he IFP has called upon owners of Sibyane Gold’s Beatrix Mine in the Free State to move swiftly to avoid the likely disaster in the case of 955 miners who have been trapped underground since yesterday night. The party said this as tonight’s ENews bulletin reported that up to today, the miners are still trapped after the storm affected electricity supply.

IFP Deputy National Spokesperson Joshua Mazibuko said the IFP is deeply concerned that “up until now, whatever steps to rescue the 955 trapped underground at Sibyane Gold’s Beatrix Mine in Free State. While we acknowledge that about 60 miners have been rescued, we are however concerned that this is too small a number.

“We therefore wish to urge mine-owners to do all in their power and swiftly to ensure that these 955 souls are rescued so that they are reunited with their loved ones. In the final analysis, mine-owners shoulder responsibility for the safety of these miners.

“Our prayers are with the all the miners and their families.”
