The DA notes the delicate rescue effort that is currently underway at Sibanye Gold’s Beatrix mine in the Free State to rescue 900 miners that have been trapped underground.

It is imperative that Sibanye Gold provide regular updates on the situation to allay the fears of affected families and to keep the public informed.

It is believed that these miners were trapped underground on Wednesday night after a storm affected electricity supply at the mine.

The situation requires that that all operations at the mine should immediately be halted and that the safety of trapped miners is the priority.

The DA will keep a close eye on the operations and hope the rescue effort will proceed without incident so that the trapped miners are reunited with their loved ones as soon as possible.
