The Democratic Alliance in Rustenburg will write to the MEC for Community Safety, Dr Mpho Motlhabane, prompting her to urgently intervene to ensure that the Phatsima fire station opens to serve the community.
Construction on the station was completed four years ago and the station has also been furnished. Sadly, ANC maladministration and irregular expenditure has left the municipality with no budget to purchase fire trucks and emergency vehicles. As a result the station is still not operational and the lives of the people it must serve remain in jeopardy as the nearest fire station is more than 90km away.
The station is now the white elephant of Rustenburg and stands as a grim reminder of how the ANC cannot be trusted with public funds.
The DA calls on the MEC to ensure that the facilities become operational to service the needs of the community. We further call on the MEC to ensure that the premises are kept safe from vandalism and criminal activities, as vacant buildings quickly become nesting grounds for criminals.
As the dry and cold winter season approaches, fires become more common. Unfortunately, for the fourth consecutive year, the station will not be operational because of the ANC’s inability to plan, budget and manage public funds.
A DA government cuts corruption and irregular expenditure, leading to quality service delivery.
We can bring this change to Rustenburg on 3 August.
