The DA condemns the shooting of two police officers at the Augrabies Police Station in Augrabies last week.
We are calling on the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Lebogang Motlhaping, to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting for clarity on what occurred.
It is alleged that the incident occurred while a community member was opening a case of assault against a police officer from the police station.
It is reported that the accused police officer walked towards the other police officer assisting the community member, when he opened fire and killed his fellow police officer.
The accused police officer's body was found at his home later that day. An investigation should establish how he left the police station and if an official firearm was used.
The violent behaviour of police officials is unacceptable as it threatens the safety of community members at large.
The DA does not condone violence or the unlawful use of official firearms from SAPS officers when they are tasked to keep our communities safe.
The DA would like to express our condolences to the families involved in this tragic incident. We will continue to fight for the safety of our people and ensure that justice is delivered.
