In the face of a youth crisis marked by soaring unemployment, a widening digital divide, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to quality education, Southern Africa is at a critical juncture. Responding to these urgent challenges, Baker McKenzie is strengthening its partnership with Sentebale to tackle these urgent issues. The global law firm sponsored the charity’s gala dinner and participated in a strategic round-table discussion on 4 October 2024. Together, they are committed to developing sustainable solutions that empower the region's youth by bridging the digital gap, enhancing educational opportunities, and creating pathways to meaningful employment.

As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, Baker McKenzie is collaborating with Sentebale to address the pressing challenges faced by young people in Lesotho, Botswana, and across Southern Africa. The partnership focuses on enhancing health, wealth generation, and climate resilience for youth, with a particular emphasis on bridging the digital divide and promoting access to education, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities.

Lerisha Naidu, Country Managing Partner of Baker McKenzie South Africa, represented the firm at this milestone event. Commenting on the partnership, Naidu said, "It is an absolute honour to stand alongside Sentebale in this vital initiative. Africa's youth are not just our future; they are our present. It is a privilege to collaborate with Sentebale to create space for topics relevant to this project of change. By investing in their development and empowering them with digital skills and opportunities, we are contributing to a more just, equitable, and sustainable society. Our support reflects our unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the communities we serve."

Bringing together philanthropists, corporate foundations and influential leaders dedicated to youth empowerment in the region, the gala dinner served as a platform to celebrate progress, share insights, and forge partnerships that could drive meaningful change.

Today, 4 October, the round-table discussion, also supported by Nandi Life Sciences convened stakeholders from various sectors, including technology, finance, and education, to develop collaborative strategies aimed at reducing the digital divide in Southern Africa, enhancing youth access to healthcare and education, promoting entrepreneurship and employment opportunities, and addressing gender inequity and social inclusion.

Baker McKenzie's relationship with Sentebale dates back to 2008, underscoring a shared vision of empowering the next generation. The firm's support has been inspired by the leadership of Dr. Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair of Sentebale's Board, whose dedication to youth development resonates with Baker McKenzie's values.

"Nelson Mandela once said, 'There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.' This partnership embodies that spirit," added Naidu. "With Sentebale's focused efforts and our shared commitment, we are confident that we can make a significant difference in the lives of young people across Southern Africa."
