Tanzania
Tanzania is a country in East Africa bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. The capital is Dodoma, though the largest city and commercial hub is Dar es Salaam on the coast. With a population exceeding 60-million, Tanzania is one of the most populous nations in Africa and has an economy driven by agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing. Key exports include gold, coffee, cashew nuts, tobacco and gemstones, particularly tanzanite, which is found only in the country. The currency is the Tanzanian shilling, and the government operates as a unitary presidential republic. Tanzania is a member of the East African Community, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community. The mining sector is significant, with substantial deposits of gold, diamonds, coal and natural gas, while the country also seeks to expand its industrial base and attract foreign investment in infrastructure and energy. Tanzania was formed in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, following independence from British colonial rule in the early 1960s.
