Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is a province of South Africa. It is the largest province by area, covering about 372 000 km², but the most sparsely populated. The provincial capital is Kimberley, a historic diamond-mining city. The province is characterised by arid and semi-arid landscapes, including parts of the Kalahari Desert and the Karoo. Mining dominates the economy, with significant deposits of diamonds, iron ore, manganese and other minerals. The province is home to major mining operations in areas such as Sishen, Kolomela and the diamond fields around Kimberley. Agriculture, particularly sheep farming and viticulture in the Orange River valley, also contributes to the economy. The Northern Cape shares borders with Namibia and Botswana to the north and west, and with the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and North West provinces internally. The province faces development challenges including water scarcity, low population density and limited infrastructure in remote areas. It was established in 1994 following South Africa's transition to democracy, carved from the northern part of the former Cape Province.
