Mogadishu
Mogadishu is the capital and largest city of Somalia, located on the Indian Ocean coast in the south-eastern part of the country. It serves as the political, economic and cultural centre of Somalia, housing the federal government and key national institutions. The city has an estimated population of more than two million people, making it one of the most populous urban centres in the Horn of Africa. Mogadishu's economy is driven by port activities, trade, telecommunications and a growing services sector, with its deep-water harbour serving as a vital gateway for imports and exports. The city has experienced significant reconstruction and investment in recent years, following decades of civil conflict and instability that severely damaged infrastructure and displaced large portions of the population. Security remains a challenge, with the militant group al-Shabaab continuing to carry out attacks despite the presence of African Union and Somali government forces. Mogadishu is also a focal point for international engagement in Somalia, attracting interest from regional powers and global actors including China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, many of whom maintain diplomatic missions or development projects in the city. The city's strategic location on the Indian Ocean and its role as Somalia's primary port make it central to regional trade and geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa. Historically, Mogadishu was a prosperous trading hub and centre of Islamic scholarship, with roots stretching back more than a millennium.
