Kgalema Motlanthe
Kgalema Motlanthe is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from September 2008 to May 2009, following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki. He is a veteran of the African National Congress (ANC) and held the position of deputy president of South Africa under Jacob Zuma from 2009 to 2014. Motlanthe's path to the presidency came through his role as deputy president of the ANC and his reputation as a unifying figure during a period of internal party turmoil. Before assuming the presidency, he served as secretary-general of the ANC from 1997 to 2007, a position in which he played a key administrative and organisational role within the party. His tenure as president was marked by its transitional nature, bridging the gap between the Mbeki and Zuma administrations. Motlanthe is known for his measured approach to politics and his commitment to constitutional governance. He has been involved in anti-apartheid activism since his youth and spent ten years on Robben Island as a political prisoner. After leaving the deputy presidency in 2014, he has remained active in public life through various advisory and governance roles. His career reflects decades of service within the ANC and South African government, spanning the struggle era through to democratic governance.
