Chile
Chile is a South American country located along the continent's western edge, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes mountain range to the east. The capital and largest city is Santiago. With a population of about 19-million, Chile has a diversified economy heavily reliant on mining, particularly copper production. The country is the world's largest copper producer, accounting for roughly a quarter to a third of global supply, with major deposits in the Atacama Desert and other northern regions. Chile's currency is the Chilean peso. The economy also encompasses agriculture, forestry, fishing, wine production and manufacturing. Chile operates as a presidential republic with a strong tradition of democratic governance. The country is a member of the Pacific Alliance, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Chile achieved independence from Spain in 1818 and has since developed into one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations, though it experienced military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990 before returning to democracy.
