Unisa applauds High Court decision ordering Nzimande to withdraw administration notice

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has welcomed an order of the High Court interdicting the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Blade Nzimande from placing the institution under administration.

This comes after the court ordered Nzimande, in August, not to act on the recommendations of the Mosia report until the two separate applications challenging it are finalised.

The 309-page report by Professor Themba Mosia, an independent assessor appointed to investigate Unisa's affairs, recommended that Unisa be placed under administration following findings on the performance of management and the council and financial management.

Unisa maintains that the report and subsequent recommendations are inherently flawed and may only serve to harm the university.

“Unisa wishes to assure the public that the academic programme of the university remains intact, and its finances are healthy. In May 2023, the Council on Higher Education issued its Institutional Audit report that affirms that Unisa’s academic programme and quality assurance systems are largely intact and governed according to norms and standards of the sector,” the university said.
