The newly elected South African Local Government Association (Salga) chairperson in Mpumalanga Walter Mngomezulu has thanked the provincial executive committee (PEC) for the confidence it has shown in him.

“As a collective, we will continue to deliver on the work entrusted to us by our member municipalities,” he said.

Salga’s eighty-forth PEC meeting, held on Wednesday in Gert Sibande district municipality, saw the election of Gert Sibande district municipality Mayor Mngomezulu as its chairperson; Emalahleni local municipality Mayor Leah Mabuza; Nkangala district municipality Mayor Thomas Ngwenya and Bushbuckridge local municipality Speaker Ruth Rakganye as its deputy chairpersons.

These vacancies arose following the 2024 national and provincial elections, as well as the vacancy following the passing of Tiny Mthimunye, who was a PEC member and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) representative.

Salga said it is proud of its own Salga Mpumalanga PEC members who have been elected.

Mngomezulu congratulated all members elected to the provincial legislatures, NCOP, and National Assembly.

Jesta Sidell is elected to legislature, Sylvia Nxumalo to the NCOP while Khethiwe Moeketsi is Social Services MEC.

Salga said the two other positions within the PEC were deferred to the next PEC meeting.
