SA: Sisulu calls on housing beneficiaries not to sell their houses

Visiting the Westonaria Borwa integrated human settlements over R8 billion, the Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu has called on the community members of Westonaria Borwa to preserve and cherish their houses and look after the community infrastructure.

Minister Sisulu visited the Westonaria housing project with the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile to kick start an aggressive title deeds roll-out campaign aimed at restoring dignity and land ownership for poor South Africa.

"A house is your empowerment from your government, please don't sell it for short term gains, it is your family asset. I am warning you against people who will tempt you to sell, they know your house is a valuable asset, never sell" said, Minister Sisulu.

The Minister congratulated the MEC Mashatile for leading this project from the front and resolving all challenges to fast track the delivery of houses. “I am impressed by this project, it makes me very proud of what we have achieved as government”, added Sisulu.

The Westonaria Borwa housing project is one of the mega projects around the country. It is expected to yield 16 000 houses which include BNG/RDP, bonded, gap market, and social housing or rental stock as well as social and economic amenities.

The project which has delivered close to 1700 houses and 3000 serviced sites was initially aimed at eradicating the existing informal settlement of Bekkersdal, however the other informal settlements have since been incorporated into the project. These include Waterworks, Zuurbekom, Thusanang and Venterspos.

The Department of Human Settlements is committed to restoring the dignity and improving the quality of lives of ordinary South Africans through the delivery of integrated and sustainable human settlements. To date, over 4,6 million houses and subsidies have been delivered across the country benefiting millions of deserving households.
