Retreat collapsed bulk sewer repair completed, road reinstatements to start

18th May 2023

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has completed repairing the 30-meter long bulk sewer main pipeline that collapsed in Prince George Drive, Retreat. Thank you to residents and commuters for their patience while the City reaches the final stretch to reinstate the road. Read more below:

The City is currently busy reinstating the section of Price George Drive that was cordoned off since March. It was cordoned off so the repairs to the collapsed sewer could be completed.

Other key work that has been completed includes:

‘Now that the 30m of damaged sewer pipeline has been replaced with a new pipeline, the City is one step closer to reopening the affected section of Prince George Drive to motorists.

‘While there has been much progress on site, work is still not over yet. Reinstating the actual road is next on the to-do list. This work will largely depend on weather conditions because it cannot be done in the rain and when the ground is wet.

‘Teams are continuing to do all they can to ensure the work is done as soon as possible while also prioritising the safety of staff on site while on duty. The Directorate is monitoring the progress on site very closely.

‘A big thank you to residents and commuters for their patience and support throughout this project.

‘This project has unfortunately experienced delays ranging from, pumps being vandalised more than once, theft of material and the deliberate damage done to lay flat hose conveying the sewage for continued service availability during the repair.

‘It has not been the easiest of jobs given the issues impacting the repair process, but together we persevered.

‘We are looking forward to reopening the affected section of road hopefully before the end of this month, depending on weather conditions,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
