On 31 August 2023, Rand Water will launch Phase One of Station 5A, which is a 600 Million-Litre water purification plant at the existing Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.

The commissioning of Phase One of Station 5A will culminate in the addition of 150 Million Litres of water per day into the system. By the end of 2024, the second phase of this scheme will add an additional 450 Million Litres per day of water supply. This will bring the overall augmentation into the system to 600 Million Litres per day as part of Rand Water’s wide-range augmentation plan to ensure sustainable future water supply to its customers.

The construction of Station 5A forms part of Rand Water’s infrastructure upgrading and augmentation strategy as evident by the recent launch of the 210 Million Litres Vlakfontein Reservoir in February this year, which is situated in the City of Ekurhuleni.

In the last financial year, Rand Water announced an ambitious CAPEX plan to the value of approximately R40 billion. The CAPEX plan entails the upgrading, refurbishment, and replacements of assets across the entire Rand Water network.

The Station 5A Water Purification Plant built adjacent to the existing Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant is a major milestone in Rand Water’s augmentation strategy.

The launch of Station 5A will be attended by the Honourable Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu.
