PSA demands conversion of contract workers at KwaZulu-Natal Coastal TVET College

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande

The Public Servants Association (PSA) calls for the urgent conversion of the employment contracts of contract workers at the Coastal TVET College in KwaZulu-Natal to permanent positions within the next seven days.

The PSA rejects any attempt to retrench over 40 dedicated contract workers who have faithfully served the Coastal College for over a decade. This flagrant disregard for justice is tantamount to the exploitation of hardworking individuals. The PSA has initiated the necessary steps to start a collective bargaining process to ensure effective dispute resolution and also ensure that these workers’ employment contracts are converted to permanent positions and that they be granted equal or similar benefits to their counterparts who perform the same duties.

The PSA is further extremely concerned about the glaring issue of critical management positions that remain unfilled at the College. The PSA believes that unless these positions are urgently filled, the College will continue to lack stability.

The PSA urges the Minister of Higher Education and Training to prioritise this dire situation and rebuild the tarnished image of the Coastal TVET College. Suitable budget must be allocated for the conversation of all contract workers’ contracts to permanent-appointment contracts. The PSA will continue to pursue this matter in the interests of these employees.
