The Public Servants Association (PSA), representing more than 245 000 public-sector employees, acknowledges the announcement of the new national executive of Cabinet with cautious optimism.
The PSA recognizes that the appointment of the new national executive members to Cabinet follows extensive negotiations amongst political parties participating in the Government of National Unity. Appointments, guided by a statement of intent aimed at upholding democratic principles, outline a collaborative effort by diverse political role players to govern responsibly.
As South Africa’s the seventh administration takes shape, the PSA emphasizes the importance of capable, ethical, and competent leadership committed to advancing the interests of all South Africans. Key priorities such as economic growth, job creation, poverty eradication, and reducing inequality must be at the forefront of government's agenda.
Whilst the PSA appreciates continuity in critical portfolios, such as the Minister of Finance, to ensure market confidence and effective governance, the Union calls for careful consideration in expanding the number of ministerial and deputy-ministerial posts. Such expansions should not overshadow critical budgetary allocations for essential services and public-servant welfare.
The PSA urges the incoming government to prioritise clear policy direction, visionary leadership, and effective communication to ensure stability and continuity in public-service delivery. It is imperative that bureaucratic processes remain efficient and that appointments of Director-Generals uphold professional standards without political interference. The PSA further stresses the importance of respecting labour-relations regulations and fostering labour peace in the public service under the leadership of the Minister of Public Service and Administration.
As the new dispensation unfolds, the PSA remains vigilant in monitoring the transition to safeguard the interests of public-sector employees and avoid disruption to service delivery. The PSA extends best wishes to all newly appointed ministers and trusts that they will serve with diligence and honour in their new roles in the best interest of South Africa.
