Political intervention urgently required in Musina water protest

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has written to the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Basikopo Makamu, to urgently intervene in the Musina water protest.

The protest is as a result of a shortage of water in the entire town and the delayed response in resuming normal water supply to the town.

Over the years, residents of Musina have been subjected to constant and prolonged disruptions to water supply due to Vhembe District Municipality’s failure to maintain existing infrastructure and to replace ageing water infrastructure.

Last year, the DA wrote a letter to the Municipal Manager in Vhembe District Municipality, Sylvia Ndou, to urgently address the constant water shortages and delays in the resumption of normal water supply to residents in Musina.

It is clear that the ANC governed municipality is inept at providing a basic service such as water to the citizens of Musina. We call on MEC Makamu to intervene and address the grievances of Musina residents.

Although the DA condemns the destruction of property in the strongest possible terms, we have sympathy with a frustrated community who are desperate for a consistent supply of water.

The DA believes that it is unacceptable for residents to endure water cuts that last for long periods of time and occur frequently. Residents of Musina deserve to have a reliable water supply and well maintained water infrastructure.
