Parliament concerned over UDM deputy leader Kwankwa’s kidnapping

Parliament said on Wednesday that it was deeply concerned by the kidnapping of the United Democratic Movement’s (UDM’s) deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa.

Kwankwa was kidnapped en route to the Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday. He was to attend the Presidential inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings, in Gauteng, on Wednesday.

He was returned safely on the same day, after the party paid a R10 000 ransom.

Kwankwa’s vehicle and other personal items were stolen but the vehicle was later found abandoned.

Parliament said it was relieved that Kwankwa was returned safely but expressed shock and concern at the incident.

“This act of criminality is deeply troubling, and Parliament calls on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into this attack and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. We extend our full support to Mr Kwankwa and our thoughts are with him as he comes to terms with the trauma of this incident,” Parliament said.
