Incomplete R22 million road disintegrates after recent rains due to poor workmanship

14th November 2022

The DA will write to the Municipal Manager in Lepelle Nkumpi, Morongwe Monyepao, to provide reasons why the contractor of the Mogoto-Mshongo Gravel to Tar Project was paid R20 386 845 of the R22 801 172.80 million for an incomplete project.

Poor workmanship on the 3 kilometre gravel to tar road project started to disintegrated partially due to recent rains and lack of storm water drainage, which flooded not only the road, but nearby houses. (See photos here, here, here and here)

The DA is aware that the project is still under construction however, it is clearly defective due to lack of drainage which not only damaged the road and nearby businesses and homes but caused havoc in the community.

With only two weeks before the project completion date, we call on the municipal manager to intervene to ensure that the project is executed according to acceptable standards and inspected before the remaining R2 414 327.80 is paid to the contractor.

We will further investigate the tender documents to ascertain how a contract for tarring a 3-kilometre stretch of road can be awarded for such an exorbitant amount.
