IFP secures 7 wards in KZN by-elections

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has gained a majority in several wards, many of which were previously controlled by the African National Congress (ANC).

The party said it was overwhelmed with gratitude to the people of the province, following its victory in Wednesday’s by-elections, where it secured 7 out of 12 contested wards.

The ANC won 3 wards, the MK Party 1 and the Democratic Alliance 1.

The IFP won Ward 10 of uMvoti municipality in Greytown, Ward 10 of uMthonjaneni municipality, Ward 15 of uPhongolo municipality, Ward 11 of Nongoma municipality, and Wards 2, 9 and 19 of uMzumbe municipality in the South Coast of KZN.

IFP KZN deputy chairperson Inkosi Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala said this was a significant victory for the party that affirmed the continued trust the people of KZN have in the IFP’s leadership.

“It is evident that the residents of KZN support the IFP’s decision to form a Government of Provincial Unity in the province, which will ensure swift and effective service delivery, that will put the citizens of KZN first,” said Shabalala.

The IFP urged its seven newly elected councillors to emulate the leadership of the late Founder and President Emeritus Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
