Herbert Smith Freehills promotes Ernst Müller to director in Johannesburg

Leading international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills is promoting Ernst Müller to director. His appointment takes effect on 1 May 2024.

Ernst is a senior associate based in the firm's Johannesburg office in South Africa. He joined the firm as an associate in 2017.

Ernst is one of the firm's main point persons responsible for ESG across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Owing to a background in Environmental Sciences, Ernst's practice focuses on the laws that govern the exploitation of natural resources, sustainable development, and ESG-related matters. He is experienced in environmental, labour, mineral and petroleum, administrative and constitutional, international as well as general commercial law.

In addition to advising clients on the law, Ernst also represents them in negotiations, transactions, judicial review proceedings and dispute resolution. His clients include governments, local communities, NGOs and multinational organisations.

Jean Meijer, the firm's Johannesburg Managing Partner, commented, "Ernst is uniquely placed to advise clients on ESG-related matters by bringing together his skills as an environment scientist and as a lawyer. He is able to bridge the gap between the increasingly complex universe of ESG rights and specific obligations, technical expertise and in-depth industry knowledge. We are delighted to recognise his hard work, commitment and contribution – congratulations Ernst!"

On his appointment, Ernst said, "I am incredibly pleased to be promoted to director and am excited as I continue to grow my practice and support clients in navigating the hurdles in their ESG journeys. I am grateful to work with such talented and supportive colleagues across the global network."

Ernst is recognised as a green ambassador by Legal 500’s Green Guide (EMEA) and a Rising Star in Legal 500’s Mining (South Africa).

Globally, Herbert Smith Freehills is promoting 33 new counsel and one professional support consultant across the firm. These promotions demonstrate each lawyer's exceptional client focus and commitment to the firm, as well as their deep technical and specialist skills.
