“As we celebrate this year’s international e-Waste Day, remember to throw away your e-Waste at the allocated sites across the province so we can preserve and protect our environment. Recycle it all, no matter how small!” This is a message to all Gauteng residents by the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, e-Government and Research and Development, Mzi Khumalo.

The International e-Waste day offers an opportunity to reflect on the impacts of e-waste and the necessary actions to enhance circularity for e-products. ​​​​​International e-Waste Day was created in 2018 by the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Forum to raise the public profile of waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling.

In March 2022, The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) launched its own e-waste management process in the province. e-Waste refers to the disposal of electrical and electronic gadgets such as TVs, cell phones, computers, printers, microwaves, fridges etc. This system will create a clean, healthy, and safe environment, while also stimulating the economy through supporting SMME's within the recycling industry. 

MEC Khumalo says “Our e-Waste Management system looks at coordinating the efforts of disposing and recycling e-Waste across the Gauteng City Region. The Gauteng Provincial Government is looking at innovative ways to clean up our environment while coming up with e-waste programs that will inspire the youth to be creative and train them on how to recycle e-waste. This will assist them to be economically empowered to start their own small businesses on e-waste management.”

The department has established e-Waste drop-off sites across all 5 regions of Gauteng namely Johannesburg, West-Rand, Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane.

The drop-off sites are established in the following areas: eKasi Labs in (Sebokeng, Mohlakeng, Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane, Katlehong, Mamelodi, Tembisa, Soweto, Kagiso), Faraday Taxi Rank, Imbumba House Johannesburg, 98 Greyston Drive Sandton, Stinkwater Multi-Recycling Buy-Back Centre, Katlehong 2 Customer Care Centre, Katlehong 1 Customer Care Centre, Alberton Civic Centre, Emfuleni Municipality, Bekkersdal Transfer Centre, Mohlakeng Buy-Back Centre and Randwest City Municipal Offices.

The Gauteng Department of e-Government urges all community members to play a part in keeping the environment clean and safe, by using the e-waste drop-off sites around their areas.
