IFP calls on police minister to protect whistleblowers

The Inkatha Freedom Party has called on the minister of police to ensure that whistleblowers are provided with protection.

This comes after the reports that Thabiso Zulu, a whistleblower in the alleged tender corruption linked to the murder of Sindiso Magaqa was shot in an apparent assassination attempt outside Pietermaritzburg.

Party spokesperson Blessed Gwala said whistleblowers are a vital component of oversight in addressing serious malfeasance both within government and throughout the private sector.

Mozambique's Nyusi retains power after sweeping to victory in election

Mozambique's incumbent President Filipe Nyusi has won a landslide victory in an election it was hoped would calm tensions in a nation soon to become a top global gas exporter, but has instead stoked divisions as opposition parties cry foul.

Nyusi secured 73% of the vote in the presidential race, the National Election Commission said on Sunday, while his party, the ruling Frelimo, also won big in the legislative and provincial contests.

His main rival Ossufo Momade, of former guerrilla movement turned main opposition party Renamo, trailed behind with 21.88% of the vote, CNE Chairperson Abdul Carimo told a news conference.

And, Mashaba denies that he was hypocritical in his resignation speech

Outgoing Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says there is no hypocrisy in the resignation speech he delivered last week.

In an opinion piece, Mashaba said some commentators pointed out discrepancies between the comments when he resigned and a speech he gave on BEE and affirmative action in 2015.

Mashaba resigned just hours after former Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille was elected federal council chairperson.
