Bongani Bongo granted bail in corruption case

ANC MP and former State security minister Bongani Bongo made a brief appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court today in connection with allegations of corruption.

He is accused of trying to disrupt a Parliamentary probe into State capture at State-owned enterprises.

His bail was set at R5 000 on condition that he not make any contact with State witnesses. He was asked to return on January 31.

 

Eskom says capacity in danger zone, but no load-shedding planned

Unplanned outages at Eskom are still above 10 000MW – about 20% of its nominal capacity, but the utility says it is not planning to institute load-shedding today.

The utility needs to use its emergency resources of diesel and pumped water storage schemes at a "high rate" every time unplanned breakdowns rise above 9 500MW, which increases the likelihood of rotational power cuts to stop the grid from being overburdened.

Today the utility said it has sufficient diesel for its open cycle gas turbines to run and water for its pumped storage schemes to supplement the shortage of capacity.

 

Solidarity says SAA is nearing 'total collapse'

Trade union Solidarity has served papers on cash-strapped airline South African Airways and the ministers of finance and public enterprises, asking a court to place the flag carrier in business rescue.

The union said it has requested an urgent court date to hear the case. It has served government with a notice of the application on Wednesday and has not yet received a response.

Solidarity said the airline was "hopelessly insolvent" and nearing "total collapse".
