Auditor General says the Presidency is failing to lead by example 

Hate speech bill delayed for more submissions

Auditor General Kimi Makwetu criticised the Presidency yesterday for failing to set an example on good governance.

Makwetu was tabling the report on national and provincial audit outcomes for the 2015/16 financial year where he said the presidency regressed from a clean audit outcome in the 2014/15 financial year to an unqualified audit opinion in the 2015/16 financial year.

According to the report, the Presidency failed to comply with government policies such as paying suppliers within 30 days, and supply chain management policies.

 

More time has been allocated to the public to make submissions on the proposed new law to stop hate crimes and hate speech, the department of justice said yesterday.

The department said the due date for the submission of inputs to the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill had been extended from 1 December 2016 to 31 January 2017.

It said that the Bill was drafted after a thorough study of other similar pieces of legislation internationally, including those in Kenya, Canada and Australia.

 

The possibility of acquiring a VVIP jet for President Jacob Zuma is still on the table, Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said yesterday.

She told MPs in reply to questions in the National Assembly that the council of defence had decided that “the process for a full acquisition should succeed”.

DA MP Sarel Marais, who posed the question, asked her if General Fabian Msimang, who addressed the portfolio committee on defence and military veterans earlier this year, was lying when he said the president's jet was safe and serviceable.
