Zuma files notice of appeal over appointment of NDPP

President Jacob Zuma has filed a notice of appeal in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria over its ruling that the deputy president should appoint a new National Director of Public Prosecutions.

The grounds for the appeal include that the court erred in holding that Zuma, who was found to be "conflicted", was unable to perform his powers as president in terms of appointing an NDPP, but that he was able to perform his other functions as president.

 

EFF slams Dlamini's paid SABC interview

The EFF has condemned the Department of Social Development for paying a reported R500 000 to the SABC to hold an interview with Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.

SABC acting group CEO Nomsa Philiso confirmed on Wednesday that the department paid for Dlamini and spokesperson Lumka Oliphant to appear on Real Talk with Anele in December.

The EFF yesterday criticised the justifications for the fee, saying Dlamini paid the figure to simply "talk about herself" adding that the taxpayer’s money was used to profile Dlamini and not government and social development work.

 

Human Rights Watch says SA's record on human rights and respect for rule of law poor are poor

Human Rights Watch’s World Report 2018 has found that the South African government’s record on human rights and respect for the rule of law was poor, despite a robust and independent judiciary.

The report’s preamble to SA findings states that corruption, poverty, including high unemployment and crime significantly restricted South Africans' enjoyment of their rights.

With one in five women having experienced physical violence, and three women killed by their partners daily, the report pointed out that the government was yet to introduce a national strategy to combat women abuse.
