Abantu Batho Congress leader Philani Mavundla resigns

Abantu Batho Congress leader Philani Mavundla has resigned from the eThekwini metro council.

ABC secretary-general Phumelele Phahla said today that Mavundla submitted his resignation letter to eThekwini Speaker Thabani Nyawose last week.

The ABC secured two seats in the eThekwini council in the 2021 local government elections.

Mavundla formed a coalition government with the ANC and a bloc of smaller parties – which propelled him to the position of deputy mayor and human settlements and infrastructure committee chairperson in November 2021.

The party has since apologised to the people of eThekwini "for supporting an ANC-led government ".

 

DA requests urgent establishment of inquiry to investigate corruption at Eskom

The urgent establishment of an ad hoc parliamentary committee to probe the serious allegations of endemic corruption at Eskom attributed to the ANC was tabled today, by the Democratic Alliance.

Following former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter’s recent interview, as well as news reports of crime cartels linked to Eskom, DA leader John Steenhuisen proclaimed that power stations “are under siege from a corrupt network of ANC-connected cartels.” 

He also noted the involvement of Ministers serving in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet, as revealed by investigative news reports.

Steenhuisen said an inquiry “would have the power to subpoena any individual it deems necessary to come before it for questioning, including de Ruyter.

 

AfriForum report points to decline in farm murders

AfriForum deputy CEO Ernst Roets has welcomed a decline in farm attacks, which he said is attributed to more vigilance and community safety structure involvement.

The civil rights organisation released its report on farm murders, compiled by the AfriForum Research Institute.

The report is expected to help security structures identify criminal trends and act proactively.

Recent South African crime statistics revealed by Police Minister Bheki Cele recently announced that his department is looking into increasing police presence in communities.
