Arrest warrant issued for Jacob Zuma

The KwaZulu-Natal High Court has acceded to a request from the State to issue an arrest warrant for former President Jacob Zuma over his non-attendance at his corruption trial.

The matter has been stayed until May 6.

The State asked Judge Dhaya Pillay to issue an arrest warrant for Zuma after his legal team applied for him to be absent from proceedings in Pietermartizburg, citing ill health.

Zuma's legal team submitted documents to the court, saying the former president was ill and had not been in the country since January 23.

Eskom defends request for R27-billion tariff increase

South Africa's cash-strapped power utility Eskom has defended its request for an additional R27-billion in tariffs, saying it needs to recover prudently-incurred costs for the 2018/2019 financial year.

Last year Eskom said Nersa's decision to award the utility lower tariff increases than it had applied for had left it with a shortfall of approximately R102-billion, worsening its financial sustainability.

Eskom's application has met strong criticism, with the Democratic Alliance saying consumers simply cannot afford to pay 10 to 15 percent more for electricity.

And, Former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi has died

Former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi – the country's longest serving statesman – died in a Nairobi hospital on Tuesday, aged 95.

In a statement, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his passing with "profound sadness and sorrow" calling the second president of Kenya a great African statesman.

According to reports, Moi had been in hospital for over a month.

In honour of Moi, the nation will observe a period of national mourning from Tuesday until his State funeral.
