The DA called on Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas to confirm or deny a media report that he was asked by the Gupta’s whether he would be interested in replacing Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister, a few weeks before Nene was fired.

In the news report, correspondent Andrew England said a claim about an approach to Jonas was made, but a spokesperson for the Guptas denied it, while National Treasury and the deputy minister declined to comment.

South Africans would be spared power cuts through winter, Eskom CEO Brian Molefe assured MPs on Thursday.

Briefing Parliament’s portfolio committee on public enterprises, Molefe and his team said Eskom was on track with its maintenance programme to ensure enough capacity throughout winter.

Molefe said Eskom had made strides in meeting peak electricity demand, with an average of 74 percent of installed capacity being online every day.

There was no need to boycott US chicken over health concerns as it was safe to eat, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Mzwandile Masina said on Thursday.

Masina said all consignments of chicken imports would be inspected on site.

The Minister was responding to questions in the National Assembly on a call for a boycott of US poultry over fears that it contained higher levels of salmonella.
