DA in Polokwane takes note of the election of Councillor John Mpe as the new Executive Mayor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus takes note that Councillor John Mpe was elected unopposed as the new executive mayor of the capital city in Limpopo, Polokwane, during a special council meeting this morning.

The DA did not nominate a mayoral candidate due to the current uncertainties around the date of the Local Government Elections.

We will however continue to focus on our ward-based strategy to field and profile councillors.

The Polokwane Local Municipality has obtained a qualified opinion for the 4th consecutive year and the prospects for the current financial year are not likely to have better prospects for improvement.

At the heart of annual inadequacies of the ANC administration is the lack of proper consequence management.

The inefficacies in governance directly impacts service delivery to the residents of Polokwane.

Polokwane has been experiencing water disruptions especially in higher located areas and for more than 10 years now and during 2020 the city was without water for several weeks and certain areas for months. In the rural wards, people have no alternative but to share water sources with animals.

The DA believes that the ANC lacks the political will to ensure that water is not only provided to all residents within the municipality, but that water infrastructure is maintained to minimise water losses and interruptions.

We therefore urge the public to make their voices and dissatisfaction heard at the upcoming municipal elections by voting for the only party with a proven track-record of proper and clean governance.

It is not by chance that the top five municipalities in South Africa are DA-led. Where we govern, we get things done.
