DA exposes neglect of Free State farming communities

In a recent oversight visit conducted by the Democratic Alliance (DA), concerning revelations have come to light regarding the neglect of farming communities in the Free State at the hands of the Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport. Please see the pictures here, here, here and here.

Following heavy rains in January 2024, which resulted in flooding in Bothaville, the bridge linking the S722 to the R30 was washed away. This tragic event has severely affected the local community, particularly learners who must now travel significantly longer journeys to access school transportation. Additionally, farmers are grappling with the burden of seeking alternative routes to transport their grain to nearby silos, resulting in increased travel distances and higher fuel expenses.

Our agricultural sector is the backbone of rural economies in the Free State and a reliable road network is crucial for the distribution of agricultural goods and services that ensure food security in the Free State and South Africa.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the Road and Transport Department has remained unresponsive, failing to take any meaningful action to address the pressing issues. With the road closed and no indication of impending repairs or reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure, the safety and welfare of the community hang in jeopardy.

The DA in the Free State is committed to fighting this cause and ensuring accountability. We will raise the matter with the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Provincial Legislature responsible for the department.

As the nation approaches Election Day on 29 May 2024, voters are urged to consider the critical importance of effective governance. The DA stands as the only party with a proven track record of prioritising the interests of communities and delivering tangible results. For the future of South Africa and the Free State, voters must make their voices heard by supporting the DA.
