DA exposes costly water mismanagement by MaP

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality is concerned about a major water leak on the outskirts of the town, near the N3 heading south. This massive leak, originating from what seems like a T-junction in the water infrastructure, has been repeatedly reported by concerned residents as well as the DA.

The volume of wasted water has created a dam, which then flows into a stream and back into the Wilge River upstream, necessitating a second round of purification at the ratepayer's expense. This dam has now conveniently become a watering hole for local cattle. Despite numerous reports, the failing MaP water entity has made no attempts to fix the leak.

High-lying areas in town are suffering from frequent water shortages, while MaP Water appears oblivious to residents' plight. In a council meeting held on 28 February 2024, the council ordered the disestablishment of the MaP Water entity; however, four months later, no steps have been taken to start this process.

MaP Water cannot account for most of their bulk water infrastructure, owes millions to the Department of Water and SARS, allows raw sewage to run directly into water supplies and underground sources, and loses 71ML of water per day due to leaks.

During a recent council meeting, MaP Water played the victim, attempted to shift blame, and pleaded for more funds from the parent entity while begging the council to rescind the decision to disestablish the entity. The DA in MaP believes this is too little, too late.

The DA will continue to put pressure on the municipality and will escalate the matter to our Members of the Provincial Legislature to file questions about this outrageous situation.
