DA calls on General Patekile to clarify bus protection measures

17th January 2024

Following yet another attack on a Golden Arrow Bus yesterday in Delft, the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape calls on the Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, to clarify measures he has put in place to protect buses in the province.

The attack led to the bus crashing into residential homes, causing enormous damage to property, and placing the residents as well as commuters in harm’s way.

Numerous bus companies often come under heavy attack by criminals, which not only compromises passenger safety, but ends up costing bus companies millions in damages each year.

In order for the Western Cape Government to continue building an integrated transport system that gets people to work and home safely, the South African Police Service (SAPS) needs to be able to ensure commuter safety.

If SAPS aren’t able to do that, policing powers need to be devolved to capable Provincial Governments, like the Western Cape.
