DA calls for urgent action to revive Hilton

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the acting Executive Mayor, Gregory Nthatisi, to bring his attention to the dire state of the Hilton suburb in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. The decay of Hilton impacts the community significantly. Once a sought-after residential area, Hilton is now spiralling into chaos, with serious consequences for residents.

Illegal dumping is rampant in the area, creating an environment akin to a rubbish dump. Neglect of basic services such as regular refuse removal exacerbates the problem, particularly for those having to choose between brown bread or black refuse bags. Crime proliferates unchecked due to disjointed efforts between SAPS and the Metro's Law Enforcement Department. Housebreaking, robbery, drug syndicates, murder, and more threaten residents' safety.

The area has also been plagued by illegal building activities, violating laws and regulations. Structures without approved plans, unauthorized property subdivisions, and improper utility connections mar the suburb's landscape. Roads are in disrepair, necessitating costly rebuilding of tar surfaces. Parks, sports fields, and open areas are neglected, eroding the suburb's charm. Pavements remain uncleaned for years, and tree pruning is conducted without proper supervision. Current solutions like ad hoc street sweeping are unsustainable.

The DA urges the Mayor to commit to the following steps:

Collaborate with the Metro and relevant stakeholders to devise a comprehensive plan for Hilton's revival.

Prioritise budget allocation and resource deployment for waste management, law enforcement, infrastructure renewal, and social programs in Hilton.

Facilitate open meetings with the Hilton community to gather input, address concerns, and ensure transparency in decision-making.

Establish effective coordination between SAPS, Law Enforcement, and other relevant agencies to tackle crime and safety issues.

Initiate timely renewal of sewer systems, stormwater drainage, roads, and electricity infrastructure to improve the overall living conditions in Hilton.

We acknowledge that Hilton's decline has been exacerbated by years of neglect by the ANC-led municipality and seeks to rectify this with a proactive approach. Our commitment to restoring Hilton's former glory will lead to a safer, cleaner, and more vibrant community, fostering pride and well-being among its residents.
