DA awaits findings of lavish funeral expenditure before Premier MONC

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised concern regarding the extravagant expenses incurred during the funeral of the late MEC of Education in the Free State, Honourable Tate Makgoe.

On 11 April 2023, we submitted a question to Premier Mxolisi Dukwana, seeking answers about the excessive costs that exceeded the limits defined by the state's funeral policy.

In his response, it was revealed that an astonishing R3.4 million was spent on MEC Makgoe's funeral. The DA firmly asserts that such extravagant spending cannot be justified when 62% of Free State residents are living in poverty. The implications for our community are profound.

It is incomprehensible to explain to struggling residents, unable to provide for their families or afford basic transportation, that R1.288 million was allocated to food and beverages. Equally perplexing is the fact that R12,000 was spent on a red carpet and R9,900 on AstroTurf in a region plagued by a lack of functional roads. Furthermore, R59,000 was squandered on red roses while residents grappled with water scarcity and the inability to cultivate vegetable gardens.

The allocation of R95,000 for a tombstone for an individual could have covered the salaries of 21 minimum-wage workers for an entire month or provided sustenance for a family for two years. This financial irresponsibility is devoid of compassion and reflects a self-centred agenda that primarily benefits a select few within the ANC.

In light of the astronomical costs and potential irregularities, the DA has reported this matter to the Public Protector for investigation. We are currently awaiting the investigation's outcome and will carefully consider its findings before determining any further action.

Having initiated this matter through official channels, we shall patiently await the relevant outcomes and, in the spirit of fairness, abstain from voting in the Motion of No Confidence in the Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana. We believe that rushing to judgment without concrete evidence may undermine the credibility of our democratic institutions. We advocate allowing due process to take its course, ensuring a fair evaluation of the Premier's leadership.
