 Covid-19: South Africa records 4 322 new infections and 36 deaths

South Africa recorded 4 322 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 568 900 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 36 new Covid-19-related deaths in the last 48 hours, bringing the confirmed death toll to 93 707.

The NICD said the 4 322 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 10.6% positivity rate.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 1 157 777 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 637 611 and the Western Cape 621 986.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 24% of new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 23%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 16%; Limpopo 11%; Eastern Cape 8%; Free State, Mpumalanga and North West 5% each; and Northern Cape 4%.

Gauteng recorded 1 047 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 982 and KwaZulu-Natal 706.

There were 162 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Wednesday, 7 199 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 21 895 771 cumulative tests, of which 40 654 were carried out in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 29 164 224 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 74 305 were administered on Wednesday.

To date, 16 165 793 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 108 135 vaccine doses have been administered.
