South Africa recorded 3 628 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, which represented a 9.2% positivity rate.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 631 642 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 22 new Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 96 502.

Most new cases on Wednesday were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 34% of new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 15%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 14%; Mpumalanga 11%; Limpopo 8%; Free State and North West 6% each; Eastern Cape 4%; and Northern Cape 2%.

On Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 1 249 new cases, the Western Cape 528 and KwaZulu-Natal 492.

Gauteng has recorded 1 177 022 cumulative cases, KwaZulu-Natal 646 156 and the Western Cape 632 067.

There were 128 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Wednesday, 4 455 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 22 555 062 cumulative tests, of which 39 376 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 30 397 806 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 67 386 were administered on Wednesday.

To date, 16 662 009 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 337 543 vaccine doses have been administered.
