 Covid-19: South Africa records 1 332 new infections, as death toll increases by 14

South Africa recorded 1 332 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Monday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 3 582 691 laboratory-confirmed cases. In the last 48 hours, 14 new Covid-19-related deaths were recorded, bringing the confirmed death toll to 94 265.

The NICD said the 1 332 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 7.8% positivity rate.

As of Monday, Gauteng recorded 1 161 274 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 639 857 and the Western Cape 624 731.

Most new cases on Monday were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 35% of new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 17%. KwaZulu Natal accounted for 16%; Mpumalanga 9%; Free State, Limpopo and North West 6% each; Eastern Cape 3%; and Northern Cape 2%.

Gauteng recorded 460 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 232 and KwaZulu-Natal 213.

There were 89 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Monday, 6 387 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 22 041 433 cumulative tests, of which 17 187 were carried out in the last 24-hour reporting period.

According to the Department of Health, 29 452 653 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 78 888 were administered on Monday.

To date, 16 300 265 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 151 223 vaccine doses have been administered.
