Covid-19: SA's confirmed cases increase by 4 118 and 198 new deaths

South Africa recorded 4 118 new confirmed Covid-19 cases and 198 deaths on Monday.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said 4 118 new Covid-19 cases were identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory confirmed cases to 2 824 063.

"The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal [28%], followed by Eastern Cape [24%]. The Free State accounted for 12%; Western Cape accounted for 11%; Northern Cape accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 6%; Gauteng province accounted for 6%; North West accounted for 4% and Limpopo province accounted for 1% of today's [Monday] new cases," the NICD said in a statement.

KZN recorded 1 163 cases, the Eastern Cape 1 005 and Free State 484.

There were 198 Covid-19-related deaths, taking the death toll to 83 617.

"The total number of cases today is lower than yesterday [5 931] and lower than the average number of new cases per day over the seven preceding days [7 642]. The seven-day moving average daily number of cases has decreased," the NICD added.

In the past 24 hours, there has been an increase of 242 hospital admissions in both the private and public sector.

The country's recovery rate is 92.1%, with 2 599 667 total recoveries.

To date, 13 673 651 vaccines have been administered.
