 Covid-19: 581 new infections and one new death recorded in South Africa

South Africa recorded 581 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday, which represented a 4.5% positivity rate.

One new Covid-19 death was reported in the last 48 hours, bringing the confirmed death toll to 99 970.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 47%, followed by the Western Cape with 20%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 19%; Free State, Mpumalanga and North West 3% each; Eastern Cape and Northern Cape 2% each; and Limpopo 1%.

Gauteng recorded 275 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 118 and KwaZulu-Natal 109.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 3 713 833 laboratory-confirmed cases. Gauteng is the most impacted with 1 207 231 cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 659 337 and the Western Cape with 649 663.

There were 21 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Monday, 1 916 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 23 757 304 tests, of which 12 942 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 33 485 691 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 74 246 were administered on Monday.

To date, 17 455 625 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 922 273 vaccine doses have been administered.
