Covid-19: 533 new infections and 55 deaths reported in SA

South Africa recorded 533 cases of Covid-19 on Thursday. Fifty-five more deaths have also been recorded, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 049. Gauteng accounted for 28% of the new cases.

South Africa recorded 533 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday and 55 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 104.

According to a National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) statement, as of Thursday, the country recorded 2 921 114 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"Today the institute reports 533 new Covid-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa…. This increase represents a 1.7% positivity rate," the statement read.

"The majority of new cases today (Thursday) are from Gauteng (28%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal accounting for 17%. [The] Western Cape accounted for 14%; [the] Free State accounted for 10%; [the] Northern Cape accounted for 8%; [the] Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga each accounted for 7% respectively; [the] North West accounted for 5%, and Limpopo accounted for 4% of today's new cases," said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

Gauteng recorded 150 new cases on Thursday, the Western Cape 76 and KwaZulu-Natal 93.

There were 30 new Covid-19 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Thursday, 3 933 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

According to the Department of Health, 22 118 947 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 182 419 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.

South Africa conducted 18 471 818 tests, of which 33 845 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
